The Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) is organising a series of virtual forums ahead of the Intra-African Trade Fair 2021 (IATF2021) in Kigali, Rwanda.
While the IATF2021 is scheduled for December 8 – 14, 2021, CANEX virtual forum comes up on Monday, April 26, as a celebration of World IP Day 2021.
The theme for the 2021 World IP Day is “IP & SMEs – Taking your Ideas to Market”, hence the title of the forum.
CANEX virtual forum for creatives
Intellectual property (IP) as a subject is almost dysfunctional in Africa even though most states have laws to safeguard creativity and innovation.
Smaller creative companies and individual creatives are often unaware of their rights and the resources that are available to assist them in protecting those rights.

Africa needs a critical reform to access intellectual property information, legal support, and enforcement.
If IP rights are to evolve into an asset class that creatives can monetise on the continent, a number of reforms must be considered.
CANEX virtual forum wants to help foster an environment for the growth of copyright-based industries under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
More so, the administration and enforcement of IP laws, and the harmonisation of applications at the regional and continental level.
These reforms are of critical importance for independent creatives and SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises) alike.
