The 72nd Cannes Film Festival is currently running and the entire venue is flooding with stars from all over the world. Present at Cannes 2019 is African filmmakers and stars who are marketing African movies to the rest of the world.
For the first time, African filmmakers will get their own tent amidst the world’s biggest film industry. They will interact with these professionals, sell films, find partners and expand their network. Cannes 2019 runs from May 14 through May 25.

Nigerian Movies At Cannes 2019
Nigerian delegates are currently at the Pavillon Afriques to showcase talents from Nollywood. The Pavillion debuts at Cannes this year, but to Nollywood stars, it’s not their first venture at the festival. They have in the past attended and screened movies at the Cannes film festival.
One of the highlights of the 2019 edition will be the screening of new Nigerian movie ‘2 Weeks in Lagos’. The movie highlights the complexity of life in the dynamic Nigerian city. It is directed by Kathryn Fasegha’s, a Canadian based Nigerian. It narrates an odd tale of love and features prominent Nigerian actors like Mawuli Gavor, Beverly Naya, Joke Silva, Jide Kosoko, Toyin Abraham, Shaffy Bello, and Tina Mba.

South African Movies At Cannes 2019
South African filmmakers and stars, including Terry Pheto, are also present at the Pavilion Afrique.
Documentaries from South Africa, including ‘The Rise’, ‘The Colonel’s Stray Dogs’, ‘African Warrior Queen’ and ‘Influence’, are among the ones chosen to screen at the festival.
The South African short film ‘Lace’, produced by VIVA Pictures, tells the story of Garvey, a man planning to propose to his girlfriend Vida. The couple ends up experiencing an unforgettable evening, that changes their lives forever.
‘Atlantics’ by Mati Diop
On May 16, Senegalese French director Mati Diop made history with her movie about immigrants from Senegal fleeing to Europe. The movie became the first by a female African director to screen at the festival.
Diop said it is sad that this is first happening in 2019. There should have been an urgency for it long ago. She and her ‘Atlantics‘ cast were present at the screening.
