American movies used to rule the entirety of African cinemas in the 90s because of the decline in film productions in Africa. Now that African movies are coming back into African cinemas, it would be natural to see a decline in the demand for American movies in Africa. Instead, the hunger for American superhero movies in Africa has almost doubled. We will have a look at some of the successful ones in 2018.
Black Panther
A number of different actors were in line for the lead roles, however, most of the roles went to African Americans. It became the first Marvel Comic movie to have a predominantly black cast.
Its cultural significance is noteworthy as cinemas in African countries saw a tide of Marvel fans eager to see the representation of Africa. By the end of 2018, it became second-highest-grossing film worldwide.

Avengers: Infinity War
The 2018 American superhero film is a sequel to ‘The Avengers’ (2012) and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ (2015). It was relished in many African countries and did especially well in South Africa – just like its prequels. In 2018, it recorded $2.048 billion in box office revenue.

Mortal Engines
Mortal Engines is an American–New Zealand co-production, set in a post-apocalyptic world where the living prey on one another. It is based on the novel of the same name by Philip Reeve.
Several members of the production team had experience from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Hobbit’ film crews. Film lovers in Egypt and South Africa were especially drawn to the cinemas to see it. ‘Mortal Engines’ grossed over $82 million total worldwide.
Bumblebee
The transformer character Bumblebee got an upgrade to have its own films in 2018. It is the sixth installment of the Transformers film series and many people claim that it is the best one so far.
The movie received praise for its 1980s setting. Tickets sold out in South Africa and Botswana and it had grossed $459.5 million worldwide by the end of 2018.
