Since the announcement of Cynthia Erivo’s role as Harriet Tubman, there’s been an endless thread of debate. People are showing their disapproval on social media with the #HarrietDeservesBetter hashtag. Aside from the fact that a black British actress was chosen to play the role of Harriet, most people are also pointing to one particular misconduct by Cynthia Erivo.
They were quickly reminded of old tweets from her mocking ghetto American accent. We are not sure what she hoped to achieve from that, but it has seriously turned against her. Cynthia Erivo is supposedly a representative of the black slaves and also of Harriet. Her utterances disrespect black people and the entire African American descendants. Disrespecting Black American community also means disrespecting her origin and home country.
The upcoming biopic has been expected for a while and it would be sad if it is boycott because of this. We also believe it is an honour for Cynthia to play the role, except if she says otherwise. Her performance, from watching the trailer is sparking enthusiasm in many other people. Nobody we believe could have played the revolutionary matron Harriet Tubman better. Cynthia Erivo has three big awards under her belt; Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award all for her performance on Broadway’s Color Purple. The actress may also be an Oscar away.
