New Hollywood detective movie ’21 Bridges’ which features Chadwick Boseman is in its first week in Nigerian cinemas. Currently, it has knocked down ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ which has been leading since it opened early November. ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ (LIB) was first popularized on social media. When it finally came, it stole the spot from both foreign and local movies around Nigeria.
After three weeks, playing in 21 theatres across Nigeria, it has swept in 100 million. ’21 Bridges’ opened in 14 theatres in one week, to a gross of 17 million. When divided per theatre average, ’21 Bridges’ surpasses LIB by over a million in revenue.
With a significant high budget, ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ is yet to set a record in Nollywood. For some reason, it doesn’t take that long for Nigerian movies to see such dethronement. Also, Nigerian movies don’t have as much breakthrough in other countries as foreign movies have in Nigeria. This data is therefore focused on calculating the success of Nollywood movies within the country.
Living in Bondage: Breaking Free is a ritual Nigerian movie where the use of magic and human blood to make wealth is portrayed. It is a sequel of an original 1992 movie, ‘Living in Bondage’.
Unlike most new Nigerian movies, LIB is not on Netflix and if it will be, it might be a while.
’21 Bridges’ is currently at 17 million a little above half of what ‘Living in Bondage’ made in its first week. According to ComScore, ‘Frozen 2’ is in third place with 12. 8 million playing at 14 theatres.
