The Village Headmaster

Key plots of “The Village Headmaster” to remember before new version

Nigeria’s masterpiece TV series “The Village Headmaster” was a bundle of sociocultural data tailored to Nigerians and was aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) from the late 60s to the late 80s.

The plots of the show are a bit rusty to many people and there might be a need for a refresher. Here is a small reminder.

The traditional belief in Nigeria was spotlighted throughout the series and the traditional ruler (Kabiyese) of a fictional town, Oja gets involved in all matters involving his subjects.

A typical scene from the show would feature Kabiyese settling arguments between his subjects.

More so, a scene would feature local Nigerian languages and native wears. The Headmaster(s), civil servants and government workers would wear foreign appearances.

The Village Headmaster was Nigeria’s ever longest-running show with 80% of the cast and crew now late including the third and last headmaster actor, Justus Esiri.

In 2019, the surviving members of the TV show had a reunion to mark the 50th anniversary since the first episode aired on NTA.

A couple of episodes that can serve as a refresher of what the epic show was about are available.

“The New Village Headmaster”

The Coco Yam Leaf (1-4) – The Headmaster (Justus Esiri) and a village chief are having a fight and refusing to settle it amicably. They would rather pay lawyers and take the case to court despite Kabiyesi’s demands for peace.

Import Licence Affair – Kabiyesi settles taxes and import duty issues after the government imposes the Import Licence.

A Part of Honour (1-4) – Kabiyesi orders the elder council to apologize to the Headmaster. He also announces that he got a job offer in Lagos and the council discourages him from taking it.

Kabiyesi tells him to go back to teaching and withdraw his letter of resignation – from a previous episode.

They new version of “The Village Headmaster” will be in collaboration with Wale Adenuga Production, WAP.

The Village Headmaster returns on NTA April 8 2021.
