Some of the most inspiring movies from Africa are historical movies which give you a rich insight of events from the past. In spite of what many think, movies from Africa have in many ways shown that heroism, love, and beauty do exist on the continent.

These are some of the award-winning African movies that you should watch.
Beyond the Gates – aka Shooting Dogs
The story told in the movie is one of the many, drawn from events that took place during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. Many movies including “Hotel Rwanda” and the current Netflix original movie “Black Earth Rising” also recounts these events. However, “Beyond the Gates”, which is among the less popular ones, features survivors of the event. It further questions the effort of the West at the time to bring the disaster to an end.

A United Kingdom
Reality will always transcend fiction, as becomes clear in this story. The exceptional love tale of the African Prince Seretse Khama and his English wife Ruth Williams – which was a subject to racial discrimination – is the stance of the movie.
In the 1940s Botswana, their marriage was a threat to the British implemented law of apartheid and racial discrimination. It led to the exiling of the Prince and later to his banishment. The couple triumphed amidst prejudice and injustice to have an influence on the status of politics in Botswana today.

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
The movie chronicles the extraordinary life of Mandela and is an adaption of his 1995 autobiography. Nelson Mandela stood against the apartheid system and brutal tyranny when he joined a resistant army. He was apprehended along with his comrades and sentenced to a lifetime in prison.
Mandela’s wife Winnie transforms into a ruthless adversary, and Mandela will not waiver during his 27 years of imprisonment. “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” is a true story about the life of a real hero.
