While we anticipate a great box office year, we have been looking at the speed of 2019’s box office record in Nigeria. Throughout the year, it has always appeared like it will not be able to take over the 4 billion Naira (12 million dollars) of 2018. But ‘Living in Bondage‘ sequel brought some hope when it dropped and garnered 28 million in naira in one week. That, however, is below the speed expected and at this speed, the record is yet to beat 2018.
2019 box office record in Nigeria has less than six weeks to beat 2018’s record. It needs more in sales in the next month if it is going to beat the previous total collection. With new movies including ‘Your Excellency‘ coming December 13 and ‘Sugar Rush’ December 25, this total box office record might well jump to the 5 million naira (13 million dollars) predicted by Statistica. ‘Living in Bondage’ is still collecting and so is ‘Elevator Baby’.
Does this give the box office hope?
The contribution of these movies to this year’s overall record is not to be relied on even though its the holidays. However, the highest-grossing movie of 2018, ‘Chief Daddy‘ saw its release in the last quarter of the year. It emerged with 76 million Naira in its first week. By the end of the month, it was at 3.8 million Naira. So, who is to say that if any these movies currently running or about to run in the theatre won’t pick up the pace? For this year, it might also be hard to beat ‘The Bling Lagosians’ which is already at 120 million naira.
Also, these movies will continue to make money early next year. It is a contribution that will help boost the next year’s box office record.
