Many people in Nigeria were beginning to develop a habit to watch Nollywood movies at the theatres before the 2020 lockdown. Consequently, the number of moviegoers grew and cinemas were just peaking. However, the lockdown drove everyone to stay at home instead with the cinemas’ shutdown ever since.
Things aren’t promising in Nollywood now as film productions remain on hold justified by no new film releases. While many producers turned to Netflix to showcase their films, no new Nollywood films are released on the platform. How long will Nollywood wait to release new movies in 2020?
Cinema reopening dates are not in sight and it is a concern now that some moviegoers might just lose the habit during the lockdown. The cinema in Nigeria could struggle when they finally reopen due to loss of interests from moviegoers. But also, Nollywood will struggle if they don’t find alternatives to movie releases now.
There appears to be some alteration going on the background for when cinemas will reopen, according to information from Cinema Exhibitors, CEAN. They have said that they will be back and will adapt to a number of new safety rules. With this uncertainty in the reopening date, Nollywood might have to wait too long to release movies. Probably the rest of 2020.
