ROK Studios, which was founded by actress Mary Remmy Njoku in 2013, recently got a nod from Vivendi’s Canal+. ROK has a good amount of Nollywood movies and series in its studio. The content of ROK Studios are now been acquired by French movie and media group Canal+.
Things to know about ROK Studios and its founder, Mary Remmy Njoku
In the early days of her career, a Nollywood actor told Mary that she was too small to be an actress. In an interview with BBC, she stated that she cried after getting home that day. Mary Remmy Njoku later made her acting debut in the movie ‘Home Sickness’ as a 19-year-old girl.
However, it was not until 2011, when she featured in the Nigerian movie ‘Blackberry Babes’ that she skyrocketed to fame. For the next 2 years, she produced items for IROKOTV, which was then a YouTube channel. She, later on, went to become the chief content officer at the now IROKO partners.
‘Thy Will be Done’ a 2015 movie by the actress premiered at the BFI IMAX London. It was her first world movie premiere and the first-ever Nollywood movie to premiere on IMAX.
ROK Studios
ROK Studios has been serving the African and worldwide audience via its four channels and local streamer iROKOtv. The company has produced films on petty budgets but never failed to maintain high-quality. To meet with the growing demand of its content, ROK also launched 2 mini channels, ROK 2 and ROK 3.
They air their movies and shows both on DSTV, for the African audience and SKY, for the UK audience. Mary Remmy mentioned in an interview at the launch of ROK on SKY in the UK, – that with ROK, she hopes to bring African stories to a million more viewers.
The actress seems to have achieved that with this new acquisition. For Vivendi, it is a step to cut loses in France, but for Nollywood, it is yet another leap.
The deal does not mean that ROK studios will stop creating content their four channels, IROKOTV or other existing partners. In 2016 the same year it launched its French-language service Canal+ invested in IROKOTV.
