A new feature film titled “The Burial of Kojo” by Ghanaian musician Samuel Bazawule is coming to Netflix. It is the directorial debut of the Brooklyn-based musician and filmmaker. The film made its debut in 2018 at the Urbanworld Film Festival and has now been acquired by Ava Duvernay’s ARRAY. The distribution company recently announced the acquisition of the Ghanaian movie which marks its 22nd addition since setting out. Netflix and ARRAY have ensured a deal so that it will also become available on the popular streaming platform.
ARRAY has for years been picking up underrepresented stories by people of colour and women. The distribution rights for the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand have been handed to the company. The Burial of Kojo will debut on Netflix March 31, and you can watch the trailer below:

About “The Burial Of Kojo”
A little girl who is gifted with magic powers embarks on a magical journey to find her father and uncle. They are supposedly missing, but unknown to her, her Father is trapped in a mine shaft by his brother.
Samuel Bazawule picked up subject matters that are exclusive to Africa – African mythology and socio-political issues. He was inspired by an article he read in a newspaper some years earlier regarding illegal gold mining in his country and the governments’ involvements. He was obsessed and wanted to understand more. So he did his research only to discover how little these miners were paid for their hard work. It was an opportunity to tell an original African story to an international audience.
However, the movie does not focus on the cruelty and the irreversible environmental effects of mining. He chose to make the story about the tragedy it brings for the families of the workers. “The Burial of Kojo” has also been selected to screen at the 2019 Pan African Film Festival.
