Kenyan director Wanuri Kahiu has lost her appeal to the court in Kenya over lifting the ban on her 2018 film ‘Rafiki’.
The film is a gay-themed film and was banned by the Kenya Film Classification Board, KFCB, for that reason.
The board cited the “promotion of homosexuality” as part of the reason for the ban. More so, Kenya is a country that treats homosexuality as a criminal offence.
In order to qualify to compete at the Oscars under the Best Foreign Language Film category of 2018, the film was later allowed to play for a week in Kenya.
Wanuri Kahiu disapproves of the courts ruling against ‘Rafiki’. She says it is not a true reflection of what the constitution says. If she has to, she will take her petition to the Supreme Court.
Thematically, ‘Rafiki’ is just another gay movie but earned its attention around the world, especially among the LGBTQ communities. It also earned Kahiu more success.
By premiering at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, ‘Rafiki’ became the first Kenyan film to do so.
Kahiu is now set to direct the book adaptation of ‘The Thing About Jellyfish’ which stars Millie Bobby Brown ‘Stranger Things’ actress.
Kahiu isn’t giving up as she says that she will continue to fight. Not just to get the ban lifted but also for freedom of expression in the East African nation.
