Nollywood is stepping up but isn’t quite there yet. The Nigerian movie industry is headed up to becoming the second biggest international movie industry, and yet kids only have the PG-13 movies available to watch. It is important for parents to make TV time count for the kids.
Kids get to watch the violent and sexual content in Nollywood movies everyday. It is left for parents to decide what’s appropriate for their kids, notwithstanding how good these films have been rated.
We are not talking about animations and cartoons. Kiddies channel like Nickelodeon and Disney Channels are always good for them, but this article is mostly talking about home videos that portray the true African life and culture. Kids appropriate movies like some of the ones we watched growing up are not available anymore. Nollywood will remain incomplete as long as the kiddies section is not yet incorporated.
What Parents Should Do
Most parents do not want their children exposed to vulgar languages and similar, instead they want their kids viewing movies that will add values to the family. This is why co-viewing is often encouraged, otherwise pick out age-appropriate movies and media if the parents are going to be absent.
