“Black Earth Rising” is accomplished for being a dramatic backdrop of an African story told on an international scale. The movie is currently available on Netflix and stars actress Michaela Coel as Kate Ashby and Harriet Walter as her foster mother Eve.

The mini-series looks at the experiences of legal investigator Kate Ashby who is forced to relive her past as a genocide survivor. Kate’s foster mother Eve accepts to lead a war crime prosecution against the people Kate believes ended the genocide.

The story holds much meaning for Africans, the Rwandans and most especially the genocide survivors. Unlike the many African stories that have been neglected, Hugo Blik brings to light this massive event.

However, some critical voices are pointing out it is not very historically accurate. Anyone who experienced the genocide, or even an average African, can tell that reality and fiction are in contrast. The story is simply an imaginative and artistic work. To many Rwandans this is disappointing.

However, what’s truer to us is seeing the fact that such a tragedy has the entire world interwoven. These tragedies and the inhumanity hails from the highest of places and has the strongest supporters from all over the world. It gives birth to the likes of Kate, an extant reminder of the lasting effects of genocides.
