The 2019 Academy Awards favored diversity as a lot of changes were made in response to #Oscarssowhite. At the 2019 Oscars, many African Americans emerged as winners and most of all, not just men.

Among the nominees in the best actor and supporting actor/actress categories were Egyptian-American Rami Malek, Mahershala Ali and Regina Kings. All three won in their respective categories. Rami Malek won the Best Actor award for his performance as Freddie Mercury in the singer’s biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody”. This makes him the first of Arab origin to win this category.

Mahershala Ali got the Best Supporting Actor award for “Green Book”. He became the second black actor after Denzel Washington to win two Oscars. The Best Supporting Actress award went to Regina Kings for her efforts in the movie “Favourites”.
Both the costume designer (Ruth Carter) and the production designer (Hannah Beachler) for Black Panther became the first African American women to go home with prices in their respective categories.
Though he did not make it for the best picture award, Spike Lee won the best screenplay adaptation for “
