When ‘Sarafina!’ was released in 1992 it became an instant hit in all of Africa, but mostly in South Africa. It was released for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Soweto Rising. The African classic movie became the biggest film project to be released in Africa but was never really known in the US – the first country that saw its release.

Where are the stars of the South African classic movie ‘Sarafina!’ now, 27 years later? What have they been doing since after the release of the movie which took a look into the harsh chapter of South African history?
Miriam Makeba
The singer who played the mother of Sarafina was a human rights activist and a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador. She had much influence on African culture all over the world. She was a strong advocate against apartheid and wrote many of her songs about the system.
She kept producing music and remained an advocate against discrimination and injustices all around the world also after the release of ‘Sarafina!’. She passed away in 2008, 76 years old, after getting a heart attack during a concert in Italy.
Whoopi Goldberg
American actress Whoopi Goldberg played Mary – the inspirational teacher of Sarafina who enlightens her students on the political stance of their country.
We have seen the multiple-award-winning actress in fewer movies lately. Whoopi Goldberg is an active human rights personality. She has appeared in several TV shows and media productions as a host including ‘The View’. She also appeared in a television series ‘Random Acts Of Flyness’ and has voiced several film characters’. In the 2018 movie ‘Nobody’s Fool’, she stars as Lola.
Leleti Khumalo
The schoolgirl Mazulu who fought to inspire her peers and rose up to protest was portrayed by South African actress Leleti Khumalo.
After Sarafina, she did some musicals including ‘Magic at 4 AM’, which was dedicated to Mohammed Ali. She also featured in the sequel ‘Sarafina 2’.
Leleti Khumalo also starred in some great movies in the 2000s, such as ‘Hotel Rwanda‘, ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Invictus’. She is currently the executive producer of the drama series ‘The Seed’ which she also stars in as Mazulu.
