‘Atlantics‘ by Mati Diop was the first film by a woman of African descent to compete in any category at the Cannes Film Festival. The Jury has today announced the prize winners and ‘Atlantics’ won the Jury’s second-place award. Other movies from African filmmakers, including ‘2 Weeks in Lagos’, ‘Adam’, and ‘Papicha’ also screened at the Cannes festival 2019.
‘Les Miserables’ by French Malian filmmaker Lady Ly which also premiered and competed shared the third place prize with ‘Bacurau’ by Brazilian duo Kleber Mendonca Filho and Juliano Dornelles.
The festival which wrapped up today after a long week of competition saw an Asian film win the top prize for the second year in a row.
Pawlikowski, Kelly Reichardt, Robin Campillo, Yorgos Lanthimos and Alice Rohrwacher were among the nine-person panel alongside Jury president Alejandro Inarritu. Other panel members include actress Elle Fanning, author Enki Bilal and actress Maimouna N’Diaye.
