It was becoming a popular feat to reuse characters in Nigerian movies some years ago, but that concept was later dropped. However, these few characters that re-occurred from time to time seemed to have been liked by most people. Nigerian movies with reoccurring characters have been known to make more money. So it is hard to imagine why anyone will discontinue the concept. The toughness, style, durability, and structure of these characters make them feisty and we wouldn’t mind sharing them with you.
Akpos – created by AY Makun
Features in:
- ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ – 2016
- ’30 Days in Atlanta’ – 2014
- ‘10 Days in Sun City‘ – 2017
The most defining moments for Akpos was in the movie ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ where he validated his origin – I be Warri boy, I be like American?
Fact: Akpos originally did only stand up comedy before AY decided to try filmmaking.
Papa Ajasco – created by Wale Adenuga
Features in:
- Papa Ajasco series since 1996
This character has a signature response for every time he learns something he imagines witty. He slaps his bald head repeatedly and exclaims ‘ajibgijibgijibgi.
Fact: Papa Ajasco has been played by two different Nigerian actors during its running time. This was due to a disagreement that ensued between the original cast and the producers of the series.
Jenifa – created by Funke Akindele
Features in:
- ‘Jenifa’ – 2008
- ‘Jenifa’s Diary’ since 2014
From the original Jenifa, Funke Akindele has been very brilliant in forging this character until her current status as a successful entrepreneur. This is far better for her than her pursuit to be among the flashy girls of society.

- Osuofia in London, 1 & 2 – 2003, 2004
He is bitter about his brother’s attitude towards his family, so he is refusing to travel to London to claim his brother’s properties. His response to the delegate was ‘They gave you a coat and tie to come and confuse me’.
Fascinating fact: according to wikipedia, Osuofia in London is arguably the highest-selling Nigerian movie in history. In 2003, there were hardly any cinemas available in Nigeria, so it was never shown at any cinemas, it made its money from DVD sales.
