John Boyega, Netflix Team Up To Take On Non-English African Films

Star Wars actor John Boyega Under his entertainment banner UpperRoom Productions, which he co-founded in 2016 will team up with Netflix in the development of non-English films.

The actor has shown lots of interest in taking on the film industry in Africa. So far, he’s been busy with a team of filmmakers on the production of South African crime-thriller God Is Good as executive producer. Boyega has previously shared his unique plans to reposition the Nigerian film industry.

The features will be coming from east and west Africa and developed with a basis on African screenplays, mythology, cast, characters, crew, literary properties and other elements. 

According to The Hollywood Reporter, two are from Nigeria and one from Egypt. 

John Boyega further comments saying he is excited to be on team a with Netflix regarding this. David Kosse, VP for Netflix international film says that “the partnership will present an opportunity to further our investment in the continent”.

John Boyega shares an interest with Netflix who has sought ways to grow content from Africa. The streamer recently had a committee in Lagos who announced their first Nigerian series.

While the series is yet untitled, Akin Omotoso is said to be directing the projects. The streamer also stopped by South Africa on the same trip to launch the first African Netflix original, Queen Sono.

Netflix has concluded shooting for two previously announced African projects, Blood & Water and Mama K’s Team 4. Both will premiere in 2020.
