Nigerian singer Naira Marley has had a decorated career this year. However, this year has been a trying and complicated one for the singer. Here is a summary of everything you should know about Naira Marley, from early life to current controversy, arrests, release and ‘Lord of Lamba’.

Early Life

The singer is originally named Ahfeez Fashola by his Nigerian parents and was born in Nigeria on May 9, 1994. The family later on relocated to live in Peckham, England when he was 11 years old.

Career 

Ahfeez Fashola considers Bob Marley his biggest inspiration and therefore coined his stage name Naira Marley after him.

In 2014, he released his first single ‘Marry Juana’ with Max Twigz in the UK. This was the song that brought him to fame.

His popular track ‘Issa Goal’ in which he collaborated with Olamide and Lil Kesh was an instant hit. It became the unofficial anthem for the Super Eagles at the World Cup 2018 in Russia. 

Naira Marley Arrest

Following the release of his music video ‘Am I a Yahoo Boy’ with Zlatan, both singers were arrested by the Economic and Finacial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in May. They were accused of being fraudsters. A few days later Zlatan was released, but Marley was held.

Court Case

Naira Marley appeared in court where it was ruled that he remained in prison after he was charged with 11 counts of fraud. The singer pleaded not guilty in court.

His management released a statement saying that he is not a fraudster and that his lawyer is working to prove his innocence. Marley was later granted bail 14 days after being in the custody of the EFCC. There is currently an order to arrest the singer again on an alleged car theft.

‘LOL (Lord of Lamba)’

The most recent release by Naira Marley is an EP titled ‘LOL (Lord of Lamba)’ which contains six tracks. His previously released song, ‘Mafo’ featuring Young John, the wicked producer is also in the EP. ‘LOL (Lord of Lamba)’ introduces a new kind of dance step called Tesumole.
