Netflix has been upgrading its catalogue of Nigerian movies. One can only imagine that they are now observing how much Nigerian movies subscribers enjoy, though the number is not revealed. Recently they announced a new project that is to be the first Netflix original Nigerian production. (See the difference in Netflix productions and originals).
Akin Omotoso, ‘Vaya’ director will be part of the directing team according to Deadline. CJ Obasi and Daniel Oriahi will also be directing the six-part series which will shoot in Lagos.
The untitled Netflix first Nigerian original is created in the mystery and supernatural genre and set in present-day Nigeria. The series will star The Ghost and the House of Truth actress Kate Henshaw and Ade Laoye.
The company also established a Netflix Naija shop. During a recent cocktail party with a number of film practitioners in Nigeria Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos talked about the new project. He made a statement regarding the interest of Netflix in investing more in Nigerian content.
