When Netflix launched ‘House of Cards’ as the first of its many Originals, no one thought about the meaning or that there will be more types coming. Most people imagined it is status that films get for being high quality, or just by some kind of decision Netflix officials make.
There are now different Netflix acquisitions and productions and the term original is becoming confusing. Does acquisition make a show or movie a ‘true original’ and how are Netflix productions classified?
Different Types of Netflix Originals
A Netflix Original could mean many different things. One of the instances is when a show is only available on Netflix and not on other networks. However, there are more meanings for what is a Netflix original.
True Netflix Original
A show or movie which Netflix commissions or produces fall under the True Netflix Original. These shows have not initially appeared on any other networks. Every territory where Netflix is available can stream true originals.
Netflix is also known to purchase films that already screened at festivals and they still go with the original status like ‘Lionheart’. However, prior to the purchase, such shows not appeared on any other network.
Exclusive Originals
Netflix could earn exclusive streaming right to a show internationally. Such shows could also be available outside Netflix and they aren’t commissioned by Netflix.
But for Netflix viewers, these shows are available only on exclusive regions. Though it is possible to find them on other services for a region that’s not on the list of Netflix exclusive.
Co-Produced Netflix Originals
Netflix sometimes pairs with other networks, anywhere in the world to co-produce a show. They fall under the co-produced originals. Netflix exclusively distributes the show to several regions outside the production country.
Renewal Netflix Originals
The shows that fall in this category are those that Netflix picks up after cancellation by the original production team. They renew and take over the production and distribution of subsequent seasons.
