The Remarkable Triumph of Female Nollywood Directors

Nollywood female directors are great contributors to the peak of the industry today even though there are only a few of them. That notwithstanding, Nollywood movies directed by women are among the most widely celebrated coming from the industry.

Women Directing Movies in Nollywood

Some of Nollywood’s award-winning films are by female directors and a good number of them are true masterpieces. “Dry” by Stephanie Okereke and “Isoken” by Jide Osibaeru are some of such movies. Female directors in Nollywood are definitely on the right path.

Some Nollywood producers are of the opinion that female directors make films from women’s perspective. This has become a prime factor in hiring directors and adding to the inequality in the industry.

As a result of this, female directors who are constantly out of job are finding other ways in Nollywood. They are upgrading and taking up the full package – script-writing, directing and producing.

A film industry should not be male-dominated, but in the case of Nollywood, it is. Our most recent survey shows a gender ratio of two males to every one female with about 65% of males and 35% of females in the industry.
