Apparently, American movies inspire Nollywood filmmakers a lot. Some people in Nollywood have admitted to that in interviews. But others have just copied plotlines from Hollywood and made Nollywood movies which also counts as inspiration.
Nollywood movies that copied Hollywood plotlines has had little effect on viewers. It also sort of seemed unnecessary as Nigerians watch a lot of American movies too. They are able to follow every word said, unlike other countries who have a hard time with this.
Copying plotlines from other movies aren’t unusual, however, without some approval or crediting, it can look embarrassing. Also, there is nothing creative about an industry that can not make original stories.
Nollywood movies copied from Hollywood
There have been a few similar and generic plotlines that people argue that Nollywood copied from Hollywood. There’s ‘Searching for Love’/’Pretty Woman’, ‘Across the Bridge’/’Across the Border’ and ‘Most Wanted/Set it Off’.
‘Break Up’ 2003 Nigerian movie really hit some nerves. The producers stole every piece of the 2001 Hollywood movie ‘Two Can Play The Game’ starring Morris Chestnut and Vivica A. Fox. They utilized some of its ideal lines like “let’s taste the waters”. ‘Break Up’ stars Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Nouah in lead roles.
Many producers in Nollywood haven’t been very creative both with film titles and plotlines. The actors in Nollywood have also been in roles that people consider embarrassing and we just can’t forget.
Fans who fall in love with copied stories that didn’t give credit to the original creators are disappointed at their most favourite stars when they eventually see the original movie.
