Nollywood Actor Pete Edochie: No Marriage Comment is as Provocative

Pete Edochie on Marriage

Pete Edochie on Marriage

Young people in Nigeria today are mixing up the tradition with civilization. However, they are also trying very hard to grow out of the sexist marriage era which even Nollywood actor Pete Edochie was born in. Younger men are also trying to treat women equally in marriage these days.

Most people like to find a role model to encourage them and to look up to find their path in relationships and marriages. The actor happens to be a role model to many having had a 51 years successful marriage.

But a recent controversial comment from Pete Edochie saying that “Igbo men shouldn’t be kneeling to propose to a woman” puts his fans into confusion.

Does this comment make Pete Edochie Sexist or uncivilized?

Pete Edochie has certainly disappointed many people and put others in deep confusion with these marriage remarks. The comments opened a floor for a conversation on social media.

The actor also said this about his wife: “nobody has ever asked me to stop beating this woman”. This makes him even more confusing, and if this is some revelation into his over 50 years of marriage, we are not sure what it reveals.

As far we know the Nigerian tradition, its already sold and everything today is copied as the actor noted. So culturally he makes a big point when he says a woman should be kneeling to offer a cup, not the man.

In all the subject is quite debatable. Moreso, it seems complicated coming from a Nollywood veteran who commands respect. Should young people who barely know culture regard this as a piece of advice, instruction or opinion?
