5 Uncomfortable Things People Say To Nigerian Movie Stars

As a member of Nollywood, I have been fortunate to meet influential people in the industry. I have had the opportunity to interact with the most popular ones among them. From my conversations with them, I can basically tell that certain things an average person tends to say to Nigerian movie stars are irritating.

In all, it always feels fantastic to meet your favorite movie star. But it is also hard to avoid embarrassing yourself and making them react like you are harassing them. So, to avoid any awkwardness when you meet Nigerian movie stars follow some of these pointers.

Don’t ask them questions like ‘Do I know you?’ ‘What’s your name again?

This is a very rude way to approach anyone. Don’t to say things like ‘I think I know you from somewhere’ to an actor. This is outrightly offensive for an actor who has probably been on your screen for ages. Even if the actor hasn’t achieved much recognition, it doesn’t mean they should be looked down on. Doing this makes them uncomfortable around you. Alternatively telling them your name will be a way to start a conversation and jog your memory.

Don’t ask personal questions

People normally just know too much about movie stars – their personal lives and career. But that doesn’t mean you are not a stranger to them – they still don’t know you. This is the reason why you should not be asking about their divorce because you read about it on the news.

How much did you even get for that role?

You must not fail to see this question for what it really is. It is an outright invasion of privacy. If you ask a Nollywood movie star this question, you should be ready to accept whatever reaction you get. They have been asked this question a thousand times already. How would it feel if they asked you how much you are being paid for your job? This question is offensive!

Don’t be the first to talk about their career

If an actor wants to talk about their career, all you need to do is give them space. If they want to talk about anything else, follow up with it and just listen.

Final pointers

Actors are being creative and hoping that what they do will inspire you. Saying simple things like ‘I like your work’ or ‘You inspire me‘ is, therefore, something they will usually appreciate. Chances are they will decline when you ask for a photo with them, but never take it personally. If you ever get the chance to talk to a Nigerian movie star, don’t ignore them and don’t act like a radical.
