How many movies were produced in Nollywood in 2020?
The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS published the first-ever report for Nollywood movies produced annually. The report “Nollywood Movies Production Data” documents data from Q2 2017 to Q1 2021.
The total number of movies recorded by the NBS for Nollywood in 2017 was 450, in 2018, 556, in 2019, 700 and in 2020, 2599.
Among the 2599 Nollywood movies produced in 2020 are;
Omo Ghetto, Kambili, Our Jesus Story, Ratnik, Rattlesnake and Fate of Alakada.

So far in 2021, Nollywood has produced and released 419 movies both in cinemas and streaming services according to the first-quarter report by the NBS.
Nollywood movies’ production marker
With a total of 419 movies produced in Nollywood in the first quarter of 2021, production declined by 53.93 per cent (quarter on quarter) compared to 903 in Q4, 2020.
However, 419 movies also indicate a 2.21 per cent increase in Nollywood film production from Q1 2020 at 407.
Abuja, Lagos, Onitsha, Benin, Bauch, Kano and Portharcourt are the most active film production locations in Nigeria in the first quarter of 2021.
The data which was used to piece together the “Nollywood Movies Production Data” was provided by the National Film and Video Censor Board (NFVCB).
This further implies that all registered film studios or film productions that operate under Nollywood have provided details of their work to the board.
Before the pandemic hit in 2020, Nollywood was consistent and had healthy forecasts for the future with its box office revenue.
Over the years the revenue has grown and amounted to over 3 million U.S. dollars in 2019. However, the coronavirus pandemic impacted the film industry and revenue for 2020 went down 76% to 756,657.
