Reinhard Bonnke Remembered For His Mission In Africa

Aside the uncertainties of the apartheid policy in South Africa, Reinhard Bonnke was faced with a number of ministerial crises in Africa. The late evangelist seemed to have managed them well.

During a visit to Kano, Nigeria in 1991, after having moved the CfaN to Frankfurt Germany in 1986, a riot broke out. Bonnke happened to be in the middle of the controversy. The Muslim habitats of the region were making a protest over comments he allegedly made about Islam in Kaduna.

The rumour that fueled the protest had come from clerics. The claimed that Bonnke had planned to “lead an invasion” into Kano. To further the claims, they said that Bonnke was going to blaspheme Islam. This did not go well with the Muslim youths who went out in mass and burned down churches. Several Christians also sustained injuries by the end of the protest.

After this incident, Reinhard Bonnke suspended his visit to Nigeria for nine years.
