Nigeria Music Movies 2010s Headlines

Wrapping Up the 2010s Nigeria – Music, Movies, Headlines and Surprises

There is one known way to end almost every year and that is by making a new year’s resolution. This is entirely different from ending a decade of ten long years. The 2010s brought many unusual things with it to Nigeria – the rise of political activists, old and young made headlines with either a new kind of music or invention, as wells as brilliant efforts by some Nigerians to create good movies, employments and all.

This decade gave Nigeria a new kind of history and we want to revisit some of the events that made headlines. All the amazements of the last ten years are worth reminiscing before the last day of the year.

Music in Nigeria

From ‘Dami Duro’ by Davido to ‘Oyi’ by Tuface, the music arena was bustling in the 2010s.

Soapy, Tesumole by Naira Marley and Etighi which Iyanya brought mainstream was rocked by almost everyone and so was Atlanta.

We can’t fail to mention the Nigerian artists signing international music deals all happened in this decade. All manner of new artists including Teni pulled in awards in their first three years of being active in the music front.

Notable collaborations which we like to remember is that of Wizkid and Drake on the “Come Closer” album. The world was got deeper into afrobeat in the 2010s with Burna Boy and all the afrobeat teams of Nigeria.

Afrobeat also went from being the fusion of hip hop to being an infusion of all manner of sounds including electric.

Movies in Nigeria

Don’t forget it was in this decade that Nollywood gained some intense recognition like nothing we have ever seen. Netflix continues to hover over Nigerian and African movies after their first attempt in 2016.

This decade brought with it the sequel to an old Nigerian movie ‘Living in Bondage‘ after over two decades of laying fallow. For some reason, it felt like it was exactly what Nollywood have been asking for. With some naive flicks like ‘Jenifa’s Diary’ an extension of the movie ‘Jenifa’, this decade can’t be hyped.

The movie ‘Blackberry Babes’ was made as a result of the influence of the gadget on Nigerian girls.

Art

We like to remember some of the artists around Africa who used the worlds most popular platform to get their work out. Three African paint artists made paintings of Donald Trump, Kevin Hart, and Sylvester Stallone and attracted attention.

They are just but a tiny fraction of people around Nigeria and the world that utilized the social media platform to get attention in the 2010s, along with small entertainers making headlines for music and movies.

Other Headlines

Some critical and remarkable issues ensued between top personalities in Africa. Burna Boy got into a fight with South Africans over his comments on Xenophobia in South Africa.

We don’t even want to get started on the account of Linda Ikeji and Grace Ajilore’s pregnancies and the disappointment it left fans in.

The rise of the #metoo movement which prevailed through the western world gave women a formidable voice against immodest men.

In Nigeria, it was done underground until Busola Dakolo came forward to speak against a top Nigerian pastor, Biodun Fatoyimbo.

This decade we also saw the likes of Kelechi Nwakali excel in football.

It was also rumoured in 2015 that Omawumi made a cover of Adele’s ‘Hello’ without permission for the copyright. Many accounts have it that Adele sued the singer for this.

The Success Adegor story which went viral on social media was also a big one. The infamous lady who uploaded the video of the little girl complaining decided to use it as a platform to rob top personalities in Nigerian.

2010 and 2019 are so far apart that most people almost don’t realize it is in this decade that Nigeria lost one of its best president, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. His time in office was short-lived but somehow, he made an impression before his death.
