Nollywood Amaka Igwe

Google Doodle, Amaka Igwe – Has Nollywood Kept The Pace?

The 57th birthday of Amaka Igwe is posthumously marked with a Google Doodle. The filmmaker died following an asthmatic attack on April 28, 2014, in Enugu. That year, Nollywood lost a matriarch who led many people in the industry on the filmmaking path they are today.

She began one of the first studios that Nollywood boasts of, Amaka Igwe Studios. She also laid a foundation for private radio stations with her Top Radio 90.9.

After directing the MNET short celluloid film ‘Barbers Wisdom’ her career path destined her to become a notable Nollywood contributor. She became one of those people who began modern Nigerian film and TV.

When she wrote and produced some of her masterpieces and award-winning TV soap like Checkmate and Fuji House of Commotion, she raised the bar for others in the industry.

She tried her hands on high standard filmmaking in a time when Nollywood was all low quality.

Amaka Igwe also founded BOBTV Exp and Q Entertainment Networks and was a crusader for the development of Nollywood. She stood at the frontline of most Nollywood guilds that run today.

  • Association of Movie Producers
  • National The Screenwriters Guild
  • The Guild of Movie Editors
  • Association of Cinematographers

She was a supporter of a good distribution system in Nollywood. The industry may forget to celebrate Amaka Igwe, but Google did not as she is honoured with a Doodle for browsers whose location is set to Nigeria.
