Nollywood: AMC and EbonyLife TV Creating a Sci-Fi, Nigeria 2099

Certain film genres are a bit overwhelming for Nollywood and a shift into science fiction might be unjustifiable now. However, Nollywood is particularly open to new film genres. ‘Nigeria 2099’ will be one of Nollywood’s first approaches in the science fiction world after ‘Ratnik‘.

EbonyLife TV is partnering with AMC Networks to produce the new TV show ‘Nigeria 2099’.

AMC pulls many film genres including horrors like ‘The Walking Dead’ with huge success on many of them.

The network’s release schedule in 2020 includes a back half of ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 10 and the initial part of Season 11.

They are also working on five projects in the horror and sci-fi genres of which the new film is one.

Often times Nollywood movies will take conventional titles and plotlines both to suit and lure new audiences. ‘Nigeria 2099’ is the one of the least exciting of Nollywood film titles and the plot summary hints refined elliptical features:

Set in a futuristic world, Nigeria 2099 tells the story of Sgt. Charles Opkara, a local police officer in a poor district of Lagos. Assigned to protect a visiting American businessman staking out his district, Sgt. Charles begins to unravel a global conspiracy over depleting resources.

With a description like this, the film doesn’t immediately suggest any strong sci-fi focus. It takes place over 70 years in the future and is in no way a succinct project.

EbonyLife TV leaders Mo Abudu and Heidi Uys are prospective executive producers of the “Nigeria 2099”.

The film will be written by Ahmadu Garba, also a writer for ‘The Sinner’ and ‘Syfy’s Happy’.
